Planning note
Packing for Dubai is about handling extremes: strong sun and heat outdoors, cold air conditioning indoors and a mix of beach, city and cultural settings. Use this list as a starting point and adjust it to the activities you have booked.
Practical guide
Start with the season
Cooler months, roughly November to March, bring pleasant daytime temperatures that suit walking, beaches and desert trips. Evenings in the desert can feel noticeably cooler, so a light jacket or cardigan is useful.
In summer, daytime temperatures are very high and humidity can be heavy near the coast. Pack lighter, breathable clothing and plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening. Indoors, malls, taxis and attractions can be strongly air conditioned.
Clothing that works in most places
Lightweight cotton or linen layers are practical all year. Pack a few outfits that cover shoulders and knees for malls, restaurants, mosques and traditional areas such as the old souks. Swimwear is for beaches and pools; cover up when you leave them.
Comfortable walking shoes matter more than most people expect, because Dubai attractions involve long indoor and outdoor distances. Add sandals for the beach and a closed pair of shoes for desert or active excursions.
Sun, heat and hydration
Bring sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses and a hat, even in winter. A refillable water bottle helps you stay hydrated between stops, and a small cooling towel or handheld fan can make summer queues easier.
If you have sensitive skin or take medication that increases sun sensitivity, ask your doctor for advice before you travel.
Tech and documents
Carry your passport, booking confirmations and travel insurance details in both digital and paper form. Check that your passport validity and entry requirements match the current rules published by official sources before you travel, because requirements can change.
A universal travel adapter, a portable power bank and a phone case that tolerates heat are worth packing. If you plan to take photos in the desert, bring a lens cloth for fine dust.
Small items people forget
A light scarf or shawl is useful for cool air conditioning and for covering shoulders when needed. Pack a small day bag for tours, a zip pouch for wet swimwear and any prescription medication in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription.
Before you finalise your bag, check your airline baggage allowance and the rules for items you plan to bring, such as batteries and medication.
