City planning guide Dubai
Old Dubai, new Dubai.
Make the day your own.
A good city tour is not a race to collect landmarks. Start with what you want to understand, then plan a route that gives it room.
A note about our recommendations: Dune SkyLine is our own tour company. Its public Dubai City Tour page describes a guided Old and New Dubai experience and mentions Al Fahidi and Burj Khalifa. If you book through Dune SkyLine, we earn from it. We have not personally tested this tour or confirmed its current route. Read our disclosure.
The short answer
Choose a city-tour route based on the story you want from the day: heritage and older neighbourhoods, modern landmarks, or a balanced introduction to both. Before booking, confirm the exact stops, how long you spend at each, whether entry tickets are included, and how the group travels between them.
“Dubai city tour” is not one standard itinerary. Names, advertised highlights and actual inclusions vary by operator. A landmark named in a tour description does not necessarily mean admission is included.
Start with your interests
Three ways to shape a Dubai city day.
Choose how you want to explore
Guided, private or self-guided?
Guided group tour
Can simplify logistics and add commentary. Check group size, language, fixed timing, pickup points and how long each stop lasts.
Private driver or private tour
May make it easier to shape the pace and stops, depending on the booking. Confirm what “private” means, whether a guide is included, and what itinerary changes are allowed.
Self-guided day
Offers flexibility and lets you spend longer where you like. Plan transport between areas, check opening and admission details with each attraction, and leave room for queues and breaks.
Do not compare only the headline price. Check whether transport, guide services, attraction tickets, meals and hotel pickup are included or separately charged. We are not quoting a price because live rates and package inclusions need to be confirmed for your date.
A useful operator checklist
Ask these before you reserve.
- What are the exact stops, and which are entry visits versus exterior photo stops?
- How long is the tour, and how much time is spent at each stop?
- Is the tour shared or private, and what is the group or vehicle capacity?
- Is a licensed guide included, and in which language?
- Are entry tickets, food, parking or other fees included in the quoted total?
- Where are pickup and drop-off, and can those locations be changed?
- What happens if traffic or an attraction queue affects the itinerary?
- What are the cancellation, date-change and accessibility arrangements?
For children, mobility needs, heat sensitivity or other practical requirements, describe your group when asking. Have the operator confirm suitability and arrangements directly rather than assuming a standard route will fit everyone.
A planning framework, not a fixed itinerary
Leave breathing room between the highlights.
Pick one anchor area
Choose the neighbourhood or attraction that matters most and plan the rest of the day around its location and opening details.
Add one contrasting stop
Pair a heritage-focused visit with a modern landmark, or keep the day within one district if you prefer a slower pace.
Schedule a real break
Allow time for a meal, shade, water and unexpected delays instead of filling every gap with another stop.
Keep the final stop near your plans
Choose a finish that works with where you are staying or what you are doing in the evening.
Common questions
Before you book a city tour.
Does a city tour ticket include attraction entry?
Not automatically. Ask the tour provider to confirm which admission tickets are included, which stops are outside-only, and whether you need to book timed entry separately.
Can I see Old and New Dubai in one day?
It may be possible to visit selected places in both areas, but traffic, attraction queues and travel distance affect how much time you have at each stop. Choose fewer places and confirm the timing with your operator.
Is a private tour always customizable?
No. Ask what can actually change: departure time, stops, waiting time, pickup area and total duration. Get any agreed itinerary in writing before booking.
What does Dune SkyLine’s city tour currently describe?
Its public listing describes a guided Old and New Dubai tour and mentions Al Fahidi and Burj Khalifa. The page does not confirm a complete timed stop list or which admission tickets are included, so ask the operator to confirm the exact route for your date.
